Who is accepted for treatment

Patients with chronic or episodic trigeminal neuralgia, migraine or craniofacial neuralgia are accepted after being educated about the treatment in Corona, California. All medications taken for migraine are reviewed by Dr. Owiesy and tapered down or discontinued on a comfortable plan.

Before treatment, patients may return to the clinic for necessary tests, such as an MRI of the brain and a CBCT of the jaws if required, for a near-precise evaluation of the cause of their condition. Patients are asked to temporarily pause medications such as Plavix, Coumadin, aspirin, fish oil and vitamin E a few days prior, in consultation with their primary care physician.

There is no known interference of FURROW with other medications, which should be continued, and no known co-morbidity that limits FURROW treatment.

What happens during treatment

The initial treatment uses a potent medication called FURROW, provided in a 10 ml sterile vial. Patients are first tested for allergic reactions. A sophisticated algorithm developed over 20 years at the clinic guides administration.

You are placed in a comfortable position that gives access to all branches of the trigeminal and occipital nerves. The medication is then administered safely in very small doses of 0.1–0.3 ml to the targeted nerve endings.

After treatment

• No premedication, laboratory work or intravenous line is normally needed.
• There is no downtime; patients may return to daily activities the very same day.
• A follow-up FURROW treatment is given if painful triggers are noticed in the next 72 hours.
• In 850 treatments, no adverse reactions or side effects were witnessed in the short or long term.
